Other assumptions of Karate-dō Tsunami system

A very important principle of Karate-dō Tsunami system is the equal estimation of all styles of combat. Practicing one style leads to the development of dangerous fanaticism and the tendency of competing with other schools. Therefore Karate-dō Tsunami suggests practicing all styles through comprehensive analysis and comparison of their achievements.

Requirements for the individual training levels (kyū) and master levels (dan) are appropriately adjusted to this assumption. For this reason, tsunami is frequently defined as a "universal style". Another important feature of Karate-dō Tsunami is also comprehensive use of conscience and initiative of its followers. The reflection of this principle is the rejection of "master's cult" governing several styles. The master's cult is imposing master's ideas on the trainees, which facilitates their manipulation. This manipulation is reflected in e.g. conferring ranks for achievement of various benefits, including material ones.

Therefore in Karate-dō Tsunami the ranks (which are the indicator of knowledge and skills) are not "conferred" by one person, but achieved and verified during official examinations. This system emphasises also the intellectual development of trainees. This part of self - improvement process takes place during theoretical classes which are compulsory and follow each training which lasts 1,5 hour. Karate-dō Tsunami rejects also the strive for sport success, working on the assumption that competition in such contests contradicts the ideas of Karate-dō creators and contributes to the development of aggression.

It should be also emphasised that Karate-dō Tsunami system is closely related to the Japanese tradition. It is reflected e.g.. in exams in Japanese required for the individual ranks (starting from 10 kyū). Trainees prepare for these exams using special handbooks.

All Karate-dō Tsunami clubs are associated in Karate-dō Tsunami are associated in Renmei. Yudansha resolutions are implemented by Honbu (Executive Committee) elected by Yudansha. It is chaired by Kaichō (President), authorised to represent Renmei in external relations. The activities of Honbu and all clubs are controlled by Anzen-hosho-riji-koi (Controlling Commission).

Karate-dō Tsunami system programme - Okite, is a synthetic compilation of general Karate-dō Tsunami system ideas and guidelines of activities undertaken to implement them. It comprises five theses presenting basic principles characteristic to the essence of Karate-dō Tsunami.

Okite - system programme Karate-dō Tsunami

  1. The return to the assumptions of self-improvement system of Daruma. The goal of Karate-dō Tsunami is to achieve:
    • Bodai = the state of unity of spirit and body,
    • Nehan = the state of harmony with environment.

The means used to achieve such state are:

    • Zen = mental practice,
    • Karate = physical practice, applied equally intensely and at the same time.
  2. In Karate-dō Tsunami, the art of Karate combat is used for:
    • physical self-improvement,
    • the development of self discipline,
    • efficient self-defence,
    • intensification of understanding of the value of life and health - of one's own and others.
  3. None of the styles is "the best" - they all contribute certain values to Karate-dō. People practising tsunami attempt to master and analyse the achievements of various styles without inclining more to any of them. In this manner they avoid fanaticism and limitations resulting from similarity of solutions of a given style.
  4. The conditions to achieve the progress are: belief in one's own possibilities and rejection of incapacitating "master's cult". Therefore the target of the training process is the development of awareness, independence and initiative of each student.
  5. Comprehensive use of principle of equality and democracy:
    • in the decision making process,
    • in the training process.
