What is Karate-dō Tsunami?

Karate-dō Tsunami (in Japanese "huge, reverting wave") is a contemporary name of a unique system of proportional self-improvement - mental and physical. Its goal is to improve and maintain the highest possible standard of human mental and physical condition. This system was created by Bodhidharma (412 - 532) (Damo - in Chinese; Daruma - in Japanese) in a Chinese Shaolin cloister (Shorin-ji in Japanese) in 520.

"The great wave at Kanagawa" is the famous woodblock print by the eminent Japanese painter and graphic artist Hokusai Katsushika (1760-1849). He presented on this print, in a very vivid manner, a swinging element of a huge wave, whose whitecap overhangs the entire Japanese coast. The wave carries on its ridge boats with people tightly hanging on to them - these people symbolise individuals, who improve themselves in accordance with Karate-dō Tsunami system.

The above-mentioned self-improvement in accordance with Tsunami system is based on gradual approaching to two mental - physical conditions, that are the primary goals of all practices:

  • bodai = the harmony of body and mind, that is the skill to control body via one's mind,
  • nehan = the harmony with environment, that is the skill of adjusting to environment and using the principles governing nature.

Bodai, which is the harmony of body and mind, is such a mental - physical condition, in which the aspirations and actions of one's body and mind are consistent. The body performs then strictly in accordance with orders of the mind, which totally controls the body's actions.

The control over one's body facilitates and triggers the development of skill to control one's mind, too. As a result, bodai is based on mutually supplementary control of:

  • body actions,
  • mind.

Nehan, which is the state of harmony with the environment, is based on:

  • life consistent with biological and physical laws of nature,
  • adjustment to social order and satisfying one's needs with regard to needs of other people.

Human activities cannot be a constant struggle with nature and its laws - people should learn how to use them appropriately. Anyone, who tries to transform nature at any cost, will fail. It is possible to achieve desired results only when you understand its laws and adjust to them.

The means of self-improvement, which allow for approaching the listed goals, are - simultaneously and in equal proportions:

  • Zen = mental practices,
  • Karate-dō = physical practices. In Karate-dō Tsunami system, Zen ("meditation" in Japanese) constitutes the mental aspect of self-improvement, so it refers to one's spirit.
